H.E Mr Esala Weerakoon,
High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India

 

Mr. Esala Weerakoon has been appointed as the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India from 1st October 2015. Mr Weerakoon is a career diplomat and a Grade I Officer of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service.

Prior to his assignment in New Delhi, Mr. Weerakoon has served as the Charge d’ Affaires of Sri Lanka in Washington DC, USA , Actg. High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Seychelles, Deputy Chief of Mission of Sri Lanka in Washington DC, USA, Charge d’ Affaires of Sri Lanka in Tokyo, Japan, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Norway, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in London, the UK, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Canberra, Australia, Counsellor of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, First Secretary of Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka High Commission in London, the UK, and Second Secretary, Sri Lanka Embassy in Paris, France.

Since he joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1988 Mr. Weerakoon has served in different capacities in the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka: Director General/Economic Affairs, Director General/East Asia & Pacific, Actg. Director General/Economic Affairs and Deputy Director/Economic Affairs.

Mr. Weerakoon has also served as the Addl. Director General/CHOGM Task Force Secretariat, Ministry of External Affairs during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) 2013 in Sri Lanka, Additional Secretary/External Relations, Ministry of Economic Development from July 2014 – January 2015 and Additional Secretary/Special Projects of the Ministry of Housing & Samurdhi from January –September 2015.

Mr. Weerakoon has also served as the Addl. During his long service Mr. Weerakoon has attended many International Conferences and meetings, including the CHOGM 2013 held in Colombo, Sri Lanka as a member of our Sri Lanka delegation, a member of the delegation the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ Meeting in Washington DC in 2011, leader of the Sri Lanka delegation to the 8th BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2005, member of the delegation of the Commission of Human Rights in Geneva in 1992.

Mr. Weerakoon has been awarded the Certificate of Appreciation by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo on 25th April 2015 for exceptional support given in the organization of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Sri Lanka, and Prasada Sambhavana – 2014 award from the University of Kelaniya which is a ceremonial felicitation as distinguished alumni of the University of Kelaniya attached to the public sector.

Mr. Weerakoon holds a B.A. (Hons) Economics degree from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He has also obtained a Diploma in Social Planning from the London School of Economics and a M.Sc.(Econ) degree from the University of London.
